Picks Of The Week #24

Lyrics Of The Week

The ultimate graduation pop song. People still play it to this day, at this time of the year, and Vitamin C's got enough in her pockets for the whole year. Never have I heard more straightforward, sincere thoughts about ending a period of life and reaching a time to fly. Listening to its lyrics is like letting memories and emotions of the past flood your head again. So whether your times at high school are fun or not, it's always fun to hear this fabulous pop song.

Graduation (Friends Forever)
Vitamin c

And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives
Where we're gonna be when we turn 25
I keep thinking times will never change
Keep on thinking things will always be the same
But when we leave this year we won't be coming back
No more hanging out cause we're on a different track
And if you got something that you need to say
You better say it right now cause you don't have another day
Cause we're moving on and we can't slow down
These memories are playing like a film without sound
And I keep thinking of that night in June
I didn't know much of love
But it came too soon
And there was me and you
And then we got real blue
Stay at home talking on the telephone
We'd get so excited, we'd get so scared
Laughing at ourselves thinking life's not fair
And this is how it feels

As we go on
We remember
All the times we
Had together
And as our lives change
Come Whatever
We will still be
Friends forever

So if we get the big jobs
And we make the big money
When we look back now
Will our jokes still be funny?
Will we still remember everything we learned in school?
Still be trying to break every single rule
Will little brainy Bobby be the stockbroker man?
Will Heather find a job that won't interfere with her tan?
I keep, I keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking it's a time to fly
And this is how it feels

As we go on
We remember
All the times we
Had together
And as our lives change
Come Whatever
We will still be
Friends forever

La, la, la, la
Yeah, yeah, yeah
La, la, la, la
We will still be friends forever

Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now?
Can we survive it out there?
Can we make it somehow?
I guess I thought that this would never end
And suddenly it's like we're women and men
Will the past be a shadow that will follow us 'round?
Will these memories fade when I leave this town
I keep, I keep thinking that it's not goodbye
Keep on thinking it's a time to fly

As we go on
We remember
All the times we
Had together
And as our lives change
Come Whatever
We will still be
Friends forever...

Pink/ Who Knew

This is the unofficial high school graduation song of 2006. Although the lyrics aren't directly about this theme, they just reflect it so well. Produced by Max Martin, who's also the mastermind behind Kelly Clarkson's major hit 'Since U Been Gone'. So the formula is quite similar here, the quiet guitar backing at the verses and then big, shouty, loud chorus. The song demonstrates the vulnerable side of Pink, in fact, I think the song's catchier than its predecessor 'Stupid Girls'. In some ways, with the addition of strings near the last chorus, somehow the song can turn into a real tearjerker. And that's a good thing.

Flashback

Jimmy Eat World/ Work

My picks seem to follow a theme today. Get it? And here's my 2005 graduation song (with Nickelback's 'Photograph' at second place). I just get all emotional watching the music video for this, thinking about what I would do, what I would face after I get out of this place (I'm a forward thinker, I still won't face that til next year). Jimmy Eat World can still provide great hooks, who cares if they're mainstream or not. Imagine dancing to it at the prom, when the slow rock song came, and you feel all lost for words...

Music Video Of The Week

Nelly Furtado/ Maneater

Nelly's back with a brand new saucy image (which seems to be a sure thing after her sophomore album didn't do too well on the charts). So what's a better way of making a comeback than releasing a hot, sexy video with you dancing wildly in it, proclaiming you're a maneater? (and releasing it in Europe first, so that the US folks have to look for it) This video can be labeled as a tamer (or less steamier?) version of Britney's 'I'm A Slave 4 U'. Like her lost dog is the white rabbit, and Nelly's little hellraising rave underground party is Alice's Wonderland. Great, yeah, she's got booty now and she's no longer shy about showing her curvy abs. So it's a bonus that the song's cool, with a raw, edgy, 'prehistoric' hip-hop vibe.
