Picks Of The Week #31

Lyrics Of The Week

Regina Spektor is like the new torcher for the Lilith ladies. More playful than Tori Amos, less miserable than Fiona Apple, she's a great vocalist/lyricist who can also write nice offbeat song, with a certain amount of eccentricity in the music. Each song of her is a little well-written story. Her new album 'Begin To Hope' is a piece of devoting, piano-oriented work, and here's one of my favorite songs of this year.

On The Radio
Regina Spektor

This is how it works
It feels a little worse
Than when we drove our hearse
Right through that screaming crowd
While laughing up a storm
Until we were just bone
Until it got so warm
That none of us could sleep
And all the styrofoam
Began to melt away
We tried to find some worms
To aid in the decay
But none of them were home
Inside their catacomb
A million ancient bees
Began to sting our knees
While we were on our knees
Praying that disease
Would leave the ones we love
And never come again

On the radio
We heard November Rain
That solo's really long
But it's a pretty song
We listened to it twice
'Cause the DJ was asleep
On the radio
On the radio

This is how it works
You're young until you're not
You love until you don't
You try until you can't
You laugh until you cry
You cry until you laugh
And everyone must breathe
Until their dying breath

No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took
And then you take that love you made
And stick it into some
Someone else's heart
Pumping someone else's blood
And walking arm in arm
You hope it don't get harmed
But even if it does
You'll just do it all again

And on the radio
You'll hear November Rain
That solo's awful long
But it's a good refrain
You listen to it twice
'Cause the DJ is asleep
On the radio
(oh oh oh)
On the radio
On the radio - uh oh
On the radio - uh oh
On the radio - uh oh
On the radio

Bonus: download an mp3 of the song.

The Veronicas/ When It All Falls Apart

This song was released as single in Australia a few months ago, but it still didn't receive the recognition it deserves in the US. These two Aussie twins can sing for real, and this is an infectiously catchy, well-crafted song in Kelly Clarkson pop-rock standards. So the lyrics is about teenage angst, but I think it's got a broader appeal than to the TRL audience. If you love pop music and haven't heard this song yet, you're missing quite a lot. I recommend you to check this out.

The Cardigans/ Communication

I just hate it whenever anyone refers to The Cardigans as a one-hit-wonder. That person clearly doesn't love music enough. They make great music before and after 'Lovefool', people. This is one melancholy, achingly beautiful song from their 2003 album 'Long Gone Before Daylight'. The song's about not knowing how to connect to the person you're deeply feeling for and thinking of giving up. The acoustic, just-enough arrangements, and Nina Persson's heartfelt vocals just bring the charisma to the balladry, tearjerking song.

Music Video Of The Week

Gnarls Barkley/ Smiley Faces

Concept: Does Gnarls Barkley exist? So they digitally added Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo into footages of the most glorious moments in music history. Cool idea, indeed. It's like watching some deep dark secrets unveiled on a Discovery documentary. With extremely cool backing music. The way describes it may make it sound not very interesting, but it is. Just watch.

Justin Timberlake & Nelly Furtado Get Acoustic!

I planned to do this, but Zappin' It To Ya was faster than me, so I figured why should I upload all over again while it's already there?
Anyway, the acoustic version of 'SexyBack' was recorded for his BBC Radio 1 sessions. The acoustic version of 'Promiscuous', otherwise, was performed live at a Canadian Idol episode, where she demonstrated how to redo a song that already earned its own identity (aka teaching the contestants to be hip and cool). The two is worth checking out, if you want to hear something new from songs that you're familiar with.

The Pipettes: B-Sides & Demos

Apparently, I can't get enough of these three ladies in polka dot dresses. It's been a long time since I found an indie pop girl group that is this enjoyable, and easy on the the ears and eyes, too. You just have to eat up their twee, sugary music with a big spoon. Their new album is magnificient, in that they fullfilled their mission in taking the listeners to a simpler era when you can just pull shapes and dance your groove on. At least, they got me. I started to like the sixties though I wasn't even born back then.
Half an hour of The Pipettes album wasn't enough for me, so I tried to find more stuff. For b-sides and demos, these songs sound pretty good. And like most other Pipettes songs, they're too short to last. Well, more is more, excuse me, feel free to download them while I listen to 'Judy' again. That song is just brilliant.

Covers: Girl band covers indie rock band, indie rock band covers girl band!

Yes, the crazy title is right!

Here I've got two unconventional covers from two big bands from both worlds.

  • Sugababes made a dancefloor-friendly cover of Arctic Monkeys' "I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor". And they handle it quite well.
  • Arctic Monkeys sang a live cover of Girls Aloud's 'Love Machine'. Who've thought Arctic Monkeys are such fans of these 5 pop babes?

See, mainstream and indie get along just fine.

Round And Round The Music Blogs...

Some new awesome posts from some of my favorite blogs. You'd better check them out.

  • I Am Fuel, You Are Friends have a load of Damien Rice unreleased tracks. She also pointed out that 'The Blower's Daughter' is 'the best 3 A.M. song ever'.
  • Obscure Sound posted a complete Blur discography. Every single album of them reviewed. With lots of mp3 from each. Now that's good stuff.
  • All Things Go continued to do a great job with their sequel to the Night Drive Mixtape. Night Drive Mixtape's got all great tracks from Sia, Zero 7, Four Tet, Imogen Heap and way more.
  • Finally, for pop lovers, Oxygen Chunks just uploaded a radio rip of a new Christina Aguilera song called 'Slow Down Baby'. Go there and get back to basics.

Anyway, I wonder why the hell nobody wants to drop a comment here? Is my blog that boring? Or visitors are just a bunch of harsh, cold people who come, get what they want and vanish away? If you've got something to say, say it right! Come on!

Fresh R&B/Hip-Hop Music Videos! Janet & Nelly, Avant feat. Nicole PCD and Outkast!

Janet & Nelly/ Call On Me

Lame comeback effort, even for a Jermaine Dupri-produced single. Isn't it ironic that he can emancipate Mariah but didn't try hard enough for his own future wife. This video is another Hype Williams slump, a throwback to his stylized, dolled-up videomaking heydays in mid '90s. Bad Gwen Stefani imitation. In this video, Janet pretends to be sorta a harajuku goddess, with all kinds of garish, geisha-like costumes. She looks horribly wrecked, and god, cover those abs, awful! And there's a pirate ship. And some mediocre special effects. It's bad she'll be fading out like this. Why can't it be a Eric Prydz cover instead?

Download: Janet & Nelly - Call On Me Music Video (WMV format)

Avant feat. Nicole/ Lie About Us

So-so R&B love song, okay video. There's Avant walking in the rain. And THERE's Nicole PCD in a skimpy bikini. Now it's not a so bad video. And there's cell phone product placement, if you're not interested in the two aforementioned.

Download: Avant feat. Nicole - Lie About Us Music Video (WMV format)

Outkast/ Morris Brown

I originally planned this for the next edition of Picks Of The Week, but I found something better. Not that this is a lousy video. A great, quirky one, indeed. It's how summer should look and sound like. Breezy song from Big Boi, nice treatment from Bryan Barber. It's got this cartoony style that brights me up every time I watch it. Did I mention it's a great music video?

The Dreams - One Night Only, from upcoming movie 'Dreamgirls' with Beyoncé

The Dreams is the fictional late '60s girl group in the movie adaptation of Tony-award-winning Broadway musical 'Dreamgirls'. Beyoncé is in it with a serious leading role for the first time. I'm looking forward to this movie, could be Oscar-worthy materials. And I smell a Best Soundtrack here.
The song is a cut off the soundtrack for the movie. Beside Beyoncé, it's also got vocal help from American Idol alumni Jennifer Hudson, and Anika Noni Rose, kicking it old school.

Got a taste of what Beyoncé sounds like if she's in a '60s Supremes-esque group setting.

What You May Not Know About Zeon's Music Blog

1. When I first started this blog, I decided to come up with an online alter-ego, and this name just went 'poof!' in my head. Zeon. I really like the way it sounds, mystic and out-of-this-world. At that time, I thought this name is the coolest, most original name I ever come up with.
Later, I found out there's already a Latin band named Zeon. They even got their own MySpace page. I also found out that Zeon is also a name of some anime characters. Sh!t. Should have googled it first. I could have come up with something else like 'Zytonspyke' or 'Klurxyte'.

2. I can never quite settle down between brilliantly catchy pop music and innovative, groundbreaking indie music. So I just hear them all. Sometimes I feel really guilty of liking some of top 40 hits. If you notice, you can see that after I post about a major mainstream artist, I usually follow by introducing an indie act. That's the way I try to redeem my musical credibility. Sadly, most of the visitors here always go for the mainstream, my lesser-known favorite artists don't get clicked very often.

3. I don't post about every freaking new song. I don't post about every highly-buzzed indie band. I only post what I'm interested in. So you can be sure that no matter what I posted, I already listened to them all.

4. Sometimes I search for ridiculously silly music. For instance, yesterday I finally got to hear the full version of a song featured in an episode of 'The Simpsons' way back in season 5, the song that both Chief Wiggum and Homer hum along to. The first time I heard it in the show, I was like 'What kind of crap is this? I like it!'. The song is Lesley Gore's 'Sunshine, Lollipops And Rainbows' from 1965. Oh god, the title. The title. And this is from a guy who has the Happy Tree Friends Theme Song in his iPod. Thinking of the song's first few lines always brings me to hysterical laugh.

If you have an unhealthy love for silly, twee, crappy, unintendedly comedic songs, try this one:

Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancing

Disco is crawling its way back...*shudders*...proof: the new Scissor Sisters single, which is ubiquituous on the blog community now. It was like Saturday Night Fever all over again, and Jake Shears sounds like a Bee Gee. It's quite a retrotastic, over-the-top floorfiller, though. Kinda like it. I'm never really into the Scissor Sisters, as their music is a bit too whiny and flamboyant for me. But I respect what they do, and there's a chance I may pick up their new album. Must remember not to play this out loud on the speakers, or the neighbors may think I'm some partying weird geezer that's been living under a rock for 30 years. So put on your disco ball and download this.
Warning: This song's quite queer.

Jessica Simpson's 'A Public Affair' Album Samples! 8 Songs!

You can't wait for her album release? Wanna see how she got back up from the very public breakup? Well, lucky you, I just came across this site and it's got 7, yes, 7 sample tracks from her upcoming album entitled 'A Public Affair'! They're only snippets being looped, bitrate is only 64kps, but hey, the point is you've got to listen first, right? Try those out, if you like what you hear, go buy the real deal. Must check out is a cover of a classic 1985 song 'You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)' originally recorded by Dead Or Alive. Jump to 'Dance To The Music' blog to download 'em all by clicking here.

And to make the preview party more worthwhile, I throw in this track leaked about 2 months ago called 'Fired Up'. It's being considered as the second single. Urban, upbeat Scott-Storch-produced song.

That takes it to a total of 8 songs!

Mercury Music Prize...And PopJustice Prize!

I'm probably the last blogger on this planet earth to announce the shortlist of these two prestigious prizes from the UK.

Mercury Music Prize 2006

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad Of The Broken Seas
Editors - The Back Room
Guillemots - Through the Windowpane
Richard Hawley - Coles Corner
Hot Chip - The Warning
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
Zoe Rahman - Melting Pot
Lou Rhodes - Beloved One
Scritti Politti - White Bread Black Beer
Sway - This Is My Demo
Thom Yorke - The Eraser

Go to this web page to read more information about each of the nominee.

Don't think Arctic Monkeys will win. They're too high-profile. Only half of that list I have heard of. Bet it'll go to an obscure act instead. I'm pissed off that they don't list Lily Allen and Gnarls Barkley there. Sure, their genres don't quite fit into the list, but...whatever.

In contrast to Mercury Music Prize, which is about the serious, indie critic darlings, PopJustice is a sarcastic, unabashedly un-serious prize that gives 20 quid to the winner of the most brilliant UK pop single of the year. Here's the shortlist:

PopJustice Prize Shortlist:

'Biology' - Girls Aloud
'DARE' - Gorillaz
'Destroy Everything You Touch' - Ladytron
'I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)' - Rachel Stevens
'Number One' - Goldfrapp
'Over & Over' - Hot Chip
'Push The Button' - Sugababes
'Smile' - Lily Allen
'Supermassive Black Hole' - Muse
'Up All Night' - Matt Willis
'Valentine' - The Delays
'Who Am I?' - Will Young

I'm secretly rooting for Lily Allen & Girls Aloud. Those two songs are ridiculously catchy. Hush...don't tell anyone.

Ben Loves Music 's got a 2-part post covering on the Mercury nominees, with pictures and mp3s, too. Here's part 1 and part 2.

Picks Of The Week #30

Lyrics Of The Week

So I'm gonna be honest and say that I first heard this song one week ago, via The Science Of Sleep trailer. That movie looks amazing, I will make a post about it soon. I have no idea this is such an old song. Listening to this makes me feel like she is sitting there in the empty room, in the dark corner, with the window shut, and her voice starts lolling around. Love the angst that lurks in the lyrics.

After Hours
The Velvet Underground

One, Two, Three
If you close the door
The night could last forever
Leave the sunshine out
And say hello to never

All the people are dancing
And they're having such fun
I wish it could happen to me

But if you close the door
I'd never have to see the day again

If you close the door
The night could last forever
Leave the wine-glass out
And drink a toast to never

Oh, someday I know
Someone will look into my eyes
And say: Hellooooo!
You're my very special one

But if you close the door
I'd never have to see the day again

Dark party bars, shiny Cadillac cars
And the people on subways and trains
Looking gray in the rain, as they stand disarrayed
Oh, but people look well in the dark

And if you close the door
The night could last forever
Leave the sunshine out
And say hello to never

All the people are dancing
And they're having such fun
I wish it could happen to me

Cause if you close the door
I'd never have to see the day again
I'd never have to see the day again, once more
I'd never have to see the day again

Bonus: download an mp3 of the song.

Zero 7/ Waiting To Die

Decent coffee table music. As laidback as it should be. The title may suggest a pessimitic theme, but actually it's a very jazzy, summery, listenable song. I find myself humming along after a couple of listens. And the music video makes burning paper seem cool. Chill out to this song.

Download: Zero 7 - Waiting To Die

Orwell/ Clair

Another piece of gentle, summery, twee indie pop. It's got a retro vibe, with sweet, Stuart-Murdoch-esque vocals. It's not gonna stuck on your mind, but it's always pleasant to listen to. Lovely, lovely midtempo stuff. Bonus point: You can totally dedicate it to someone you know named Clair (with no 'e')

Music Video Of The Week

Muse/ Knights Of Cydonia

Wow, it's been a long time since I saw a video this distinctly impressive from Joseph Kahn. That new Ciara video is not exactly an eye-popper, but this one sure is. It's like a sequel to 'Get Yourself High'. Hard to describe. Let's just say it's a German-kungfu-western-sci-fi-B-mini-movie in 6 minutes. Wacky, but fun and different. You gotta watch to believe it.

Bonus: Love that? Download it home.

Hilary & Haylie Duff Are Material Girls!

Of course, only in their new movie, because they're not that shallow, right? For example, Haylie's only doing a Broadway musical called 'Hairspray' just because of her passionate love for dancing and singing, not because she desperately needs some quick bucks or she's dying to get out of her younger sister's shadows, right? Right?
Okay, so according to what I know, in this movie, the Duffs play the role of their lives by doing their impersonation of the Hilton sisters, at first they're all arrogant and spoiled, but in the end, they truly learn the lesson that money can't buy happiness and spend the rest of the lives doing charity work. Such serious thespians they are, they even go one step further by covering Madonna's 'Material Girl' as the movie's theme song. See, I told you, they're taking it very seriously.
Enough with that. Let's get to the song. There should much to rave about, as this is a Timbaland production. Wait a minute! The beat is so...random. Sounds like something left over from a session with Nelly Furtado. And the vocals, *yamn* bland. This is such a tasteless cash-in. I'm not with this at all. Shame on you, you're supposed to be materialists and all you can come up with is this one hell of lackluster?
Well, at least give them credits for daring to take on such a classic song.
That's just my humble opinion. I'm just a giver. You gotta hear to decide for yourself: Yay or Nay?

Download: Hilary & Haylie Duff - Material Girl

Introducing New Pop Face: Alesha Dixon

Not exactly new. She's the hottest chick in the now-defunct Mis-Teeq. She was that hot dancer in an N.E.R.D. music video 'She Likes To Move'. She isn't very well-known in the US as she is in the UK. And now she's ready to fly solo. Her upcoming debut album, entitled 'Fired Up','s got a handful of slick pop producers on the list, including Richard X and Xenomania. Any album that's got a track or two produced by those two will get my attention. Her first single 'Lipstick' was leaked this week, and in my opinion, it's a delicious slice of icy frosty pop. I expected something like urban r&b/ hip-hop, but the song turned out to be a danceable pop-rock club banger, with a killer riff. Some portions of the song are a little weak, but the hooks are quite addictive. It's got an energy and vibe that reminds me of Nelly Furtado's 'Maneater'.
So I'm looking forward to this album. She may not have a very long career, but so far so good. The British sure knows how to make good pop.
That eye-candy pic above is a wallpaper, you can click on it to get a full view and save it to your desktop.

Here's an video rip mp3 of the song. Hopefully we'll get a cd rip soon.

What's up with the Idols?

This fall, it's gonna rain American Idol alumnis. It seems easier for a finalist to get signed now. Almost everyone in the top 6 gets a record deal. Well, almost, Elliott Yamin remains unsigned. But the previous idol champs are coming back too. Here's the list of their album release date:

Mario Vasquez: September 12 (guess nobody remembers this dude)
Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken: September 19
Fantasia: October 17
Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee, and Kellie Pickler: November 14
Chris Daughtry: Someday in November

Even losers like Scott Stavol, Nikko Smith and eeww, Ace Young, are in the studio making crap. The only cds I want to check out are Taylor's debut and Fantasia's sophomore album. She proves that it doesn't matter if you can't read, as long as you can sing your butt off. She's got an impressive guest list: Kanye West, Ne-Yo, Aretha Franklin and even more. The others, I couldn't care less. I might take a quick listen at Kat's cd. Might.
Poor Katherine. Her disc will probably flop. She doesn't have a bright future ahead, since her single only debuted at 12 on Billboard Top 100. One year later, she will be referred to as 'That Bulimia/ Scientologist Girl From AI'. Here's my own conspiracy theory: She's absent from the tour not because she's sick! She could be abducted by TomKat to sing 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' to their 'alien' baby Suri. Now that's creepy.

In related news, Beauty N' The Beat just posted a new Ruben song called 'Change Me'. Click here if you want to check it out.

What The...? A Nicole Richie Song?

I was just blogging around, reading some other music blogs, and then I came across Fetch Me Some and found out Nicole Richie also had a song leaked. Doing what any curious human being would do, I clicked on the link and quietly downloaded the song, hoping that it sucks. While waiting for the download to finish, I take my time and post about it here, and indirectly promote for Nicole.
In times like these, when you're a spoiled rotten, filthy rich tabloid-targeted celebrity, you can just throw a few suitcases of cash, pretend to sing and bang, you've got a hit on the charts, 'cause you live one people's curiousity. It's a sad sad world.
By the way, the song's called 'Dandelion'. If you're just pathetic like me, go there and get it. Me, I'll be somewhere brainstorming ways to redeem my musical credibility (if I still have any, that is).

Pop Music Video Galore! Ciara, JoJo, Fergie, Jessica Simpson, Pink!

This week, we're flooded by music videos from mainstream female artists. Tough competition of who can act sexier. Is there a first lady week in the music video industry or what? Watch them all here, and if you like what you see, download them home.

Ciara feat. Chamillionare/ Step Up

Director: Joseph Kahn. Though the choreography is quite hot, her new messy raven hairstyle and her crunky costume give more proofs that Ciara still looks like a man. This is a TRL video, Joseph didn't seem to think much of it. The song is an identical twin of '1, 2 Step'. Oh, you can see her bare back in this.

Ciara - Get Up Music Video [WMV format]

JoJo/ Too Little Too Late

Director: Chris Robinson. She's only 15, and though she's growned up fast, those bastards are trying to sex her up. Short skirts and an on-screen boyfriend that looks twice her age, and what's with her singing in the rain, soaking herself wet and showing a wee bit of cleavage? Great poppy song, but okay video.

Download: JoJo - Too Little Too Late Music Video [WMV format]

Fergie/ London Bridge (Oh Snap)

Director: Marc Webb. Shot in London. She's just being fergy, behaving like a h0. The Pea girl just tries to connect with her lyrics.

Fergie/ London Bridge (Oh Snap) Music Video [WMV format]

Jessica Simpson/ A Public Affair

Director: Brett Ratner. Cheesecakes alert! A star-studded one, featuring Eva Longoria, Christina Applegate, Christina Milian, Andy Dick, Maria Menousnos (that Latin chick in 'Man Of The House) and...Ryan Seacrest. You must watch to find out if he also rollerskates with the ladies.

Download: Jessica Simpson - A Public Affair Music Video [MPEG format, very high quality] (sorry, link seems dead now)

Pink/ U + Ur Hand

Director: Dave Meyers. This was shot around the same time with 'Stupid Girls', but they moved it to be the third single off her current album 'I'm Not Dead'. Dave's at his best when it comes to crazy antics, so watch out for the badass attitude!

*Update*:Download: Pink - U + Ur Hand Music Video [WMV format]

These director dudes make their job seem like the best job in the world.

Got time to kill? Get listy!

You're bored and don't know what to do. Apparently, established web music critics are bored too, so they made all these lists, and expect us to worship them and check out the stuff they love, so we can be snobs just like them.
Ain't that cool!

Stylus Magazine just posted their Top 100 Music Videos. That's a lot youtubing for you guys. Wear your eyes out with that.

The UK magazine The Observer compiled 50 Albums That Changed Music, with logical explanations included. All the classic ones are up there. Hell, they even paid tribute to the Spice Girls. Britishs.

Finally, My Old Kentucky Blog posted their Best Of The '06 Half-Year. Lots of mp3 goodies. Regina Spektor, Band Of Horses, Neko Case, Hot Chip, The Knife, just to name a few in the list. Must-read.

*Updated*: The Boston Phoenix has a list of 32 Worst Song Lyrics Of All Time. 'My Humps' and 'Ignition' were among them.

New R&B/Hip-Hop Stuff from Fergie & The Pussycat Dolls

Well, the sidebar is kinda back in full function. I just used it as another excuse to delay my postings. A lot of things happen in the last couple of days but it's summertime that prevented me from going indoor and press the 'Create' button. Wait a minute, I'm always indoor. Okay, so maybe I'm just plain lazy. But it's summertime! Nah, I'm practically lazy all 4 seasons. Planned to review all cds I've heard in 2006, but so far, I never got to it. No wonder why my blog is so boring.
Therefore, let's shake things up! New music from mainstream artists today! Beauty N' The Beat's got the new edited, radio-friendly version of Fergie's 'London Bridge'. They changed 'Oh Sh!t' to 'Oh Snap'. They bleeped the bad words. All the Fergie goody-goody fans would love this. It's in the Gwen's 'Hollaback Girl' case, without the naughty bits it just loses some of its effects. Not that the song is any less slvtty. I feel sorry for myself that I start to like this song.
Also, Beauty N' The Beat's got the new single from The Pussycat Dolls called 'I Don't Need A Man'. This will be a flop, I thought they were going to release 'Wait A Minute'. I don't even like this song. It sucks. Enough with the grrrl power theme. Anyway, I can already foresee the video treatment for this song. Yeah let my genuine director vision roll in!

"It starts off with each of the dolls in a different set, arguing with their boyfriends. Probably about their dressing-like-a-slvt issues.Their guys are too dumb they decide to dumb the girls. Each of the girls then walk on empty streets, stone-faced, while Nicole belts out the tunes. Finally, they join up on the rooftops, do a group sexy dance routine with fireworks flashing in the night sky. A tear shed in Melody's eyes, because she's about to leave the group, hoping to pursue a solo career as successful as Mariah 'Mimi' Carey. The End.'

That's it, I'm gonna give Jake Nava a call.
Click here to download both Fergie & PCD's new stuff.

*Update*: I just found the true terrifying meaning of the term 'London Bridge'. It's very X-rated. Click here to learn, if you dare...

Holy Sh1t!

So I was editing my template to add more blogrolls, and the connection got disconnected while it was saving the new template. Now the template got all f**ked up and I had to reset it all. I lost all my links. Sh1t! This is big trouble. Now I have to type them back to their place all over again. Expect the blog to be still for a while, as I'm going through the mess in my brain, picking up the pieces. Curses.

A real, real bad day!
Must resist posting an mp3 of Daniel Powter.

Picks Of The Week #29

Lyrics Of The Week

This song played such a pivotal role in The OC. Season 1 ended with the late Jeff Buckley's version, as Seth's boat's sailing out to the sea. Season 3 closed with Imogen Heap's a capella version, as Ryan carried Marissa out on the road at midnight. Too bad Mischa quitted the show, she was the second reason I watched it beside the great indie soundtracks. Anyway, this cover version of the Leonard Cohen's song is classic. It's just a real, real sad love song, with emotional, heartbroken lyrics. Imagine listening to it at night and crying your heart out. That would hurt so bad.

Jeff Buckley

Well I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Well baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor,
I used to live alone before I knew you
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Maybe there is a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Oh No! Oh My!/ Walk In The Park

Cool unsigned band. They self-released their debut self-titled record and already built up big hypes. This somehow sounds like a sequel to Belle And Sebastian's 'Another Sunny Day', but lighter and more gleeful. Simple and catchy, and awesomely suitable for a walk in the park in a summer day. The hooks are infectiously catchy, I still sing along the ba-da-das every time I listen to this song. Overall, highly recommended.

Keane/ The Way You Want It To

This song is a rare item. It's a b-side to their first ever commercial single 'Everybody's Changing' , way back in the pre-Hopes-And-Fears days, when they were signed by Fierce Panda Records. That explains how this song is so lo-fi, only Tom's vocals and Tim's piano playing. It's still a beautiful, lush, heartaching song, the type of song you listen to when it's raining outside, making you feel sentimental. A grower, but you'll be addicted to it if you truly feel the lyrics.

Music Video Of The Week

Beyoncé feat. Jay Z/ Deja Vu

When I first heard Sophie Muller's gonna direct this one, I didn't know what to say. I was hoping B would team up with Jake Nava again, together they work magics. However, this video turned out quite well. Sure, it was pretty random, simply just Beyoncé dancing and lip-synching in various studio sets and in the wilderness. But it's a mainstream video for the TRL audience, it's supposed to be that way, and it was fun to watch. Sophie, like usual, doesn't do those glossy color touch that Jake always has. But the dancing in the sand is wild crazy! Now I just love the song even more. Note: this has the most costume-changing ever in a Beyoncé's music video. Yup, I've counted.

Annie's new single 'Crush'!

Good Weather For Air Strikes is just back after a long break and the posting's awesome as usual. They've got the new Annie single 'Crush' up, and I'm always open to new stuff from her. 'Heartbeat' was one of my grand discoveries in 2005 when I decieded to download it from Amazon Free Music Downloads. This Swedish chick's definitely one of cool cats in the electronic music scene.

Click here to get there and download two versions of the single. They even have bonus mp3s of her: a remix, a b-side and a rarity.

And I throw in this fabulous track 'Heartbeat', via Insound:

Kelly Clarkson's new song 'Go'!

You heard it before in a Ford tv spot featured in an American Idol episode. Now it's been chosen as the theme song for a new Mustang campaign. They even had a music video for it. Check out the promo site for her Ford commercial, she looks so damn cute as a brunette again. And here are the links to download the mp3 and the music video (in high quality mpeg format). Mind the RapidShare waiting, I found the links, just didn't have time to upload them to Zshare.

New single from The Killers! When You Were Young!

Yay, new material from The Killers! First single off their new album 'Sam's Town', and it's called 'When You Were Young'. I pretty much like their grandiose, over-the-top, Las-Vegas-like sounds from 'Hot Fuss' so I'm curious to see what their next step is. Let's see if Brandon Flowers and his gang can be in full bloom. (see what I did there?)
Again, Obscure Sound posted the mp3 for y'all to hear, I just have to the linking. Click here if you want to check out their blog and hear the song.

And because their blog doesn't give you direct download links, that's where I step in and provide this link for you lazy asses out there:

EDIT: Okay, I made a mistake. The correct title is When You Were Young. Sorry.

Picks Of The Week #28

Lyrics Of The Week

In the indie world, sometimes it's really hard to find a new artist you can get to like for there are so many out there. At those times, you walk through recommendations to experiment and then stick with what you like best. Neutral Milk Hotel is one of those cases. A beautiful lo-fi song with simple, take-you-places lyrics.

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Neutral Milk Hotel

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
Soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me

And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me

Anna's ghost all around
Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me
Soft and sweet
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees

Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
And now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
With one you loved so long ago
Now he don't even know his name

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
And when we meet on a cloud
I'll be laughing out loud
I'll be laughing with everyone I see
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all

Okay, I'm feeling generous. Why don't you get an mp3 of this song to listen along as well.

The Pipettes/ Pull Shapes

First time I listened and watched the video, I was like 'Okay, kinda cute, but nah, another retro pastiche'. Then I gave it another chance. And now I'm pulling shapes along with them. And another song was added to my endless list of guilty pleasures. You know it's campy, it's cheesy, you're not supposed to like it, but you end up moving your feet because it's so damn catchy, in an indie 60s pop way, in its sheer brilliance. Download it and see for yourself.

Ivy/ Edge Of The Ocean

Very soothing song, this one. Just calms me down whenever I feel stressed out. Listening to this makes me feel like relaxing in some beach resort, watching clouds above, sipping drinks when in fact I'm just lying in my bedroom. Great chilled-out song for summertime.

Lily Allen/ Smile

I was kinda hesitated to post about Lily Allen. The buzz is already huge, so she didn't an individual pathetic blogger to hype her up. I feel like there's nothing new to bring to the table but praises. She's just a cheeky British girl who makes super catchy summery ska-pop gems, who happened to already become an international superstar before the physical release of her debut album, by wisely making use of MySpace. That pretty much sums up it all. This song is my summer song of 2006 up to now, and it seems hard for any other summer songs released this year to top this one. It just topped the UK single charts, by the way.
The music video was directed by Sophie Muller, who just finished directing Beyoncé's video for Deja Vu, and it's like an indie, more brutal, 2006 version of Kelly Clarkson's 'Since U Been Gone'. With cuteness overloaded. Must.Check.Out.

Just got it! Justin Timberlake - SexyBack!

Wow! New Justin Timberlake! SexyBack! What kind of title is that? From his second album FutureSex/LoveSounds! Seriously, what's with this dude and the sexy titles? NY Post already listed it as a strong contender for the Summer Song of 2006. I've just got it, haven't even listened to it yet, but I've got high expectations. Test it out yourself.

Two Brand New Outkast Tracks!

Obscure Sound just posted two brand new tracks from Outkast's highly-anticipated upcoming album 'Idlewild' (acutallly, it's a soundtrack for their new movie). 'Idlewild Blues' is the Andre 3000 one, which has him get all bluesy. And 'Morris Brown' is the Big Boi one, which is pretty catchy, too. These two tracks are way better than their current single 'O' Mighty', which I'm not fond of. Anyway, it's Outkast, it's unconventional, so go to Obscure Sound and download them quick.

And because Obscure Sound doesn't give the direct download link, so I post them here in case you're too damn lazy and just want to download them to your computer:

Download Outkast - Idlewild Blues

Download Outkast - Morris Brown

FYI: Andre's animation series 'School of 3000' will premiere on Cartoon Network this fall. Let's hope it won't fall on the weekdays morning lineup, along with Krypto The Superdog.

An Exciting Mp3 Interview Between Nelly Furtado & Rolling Stone Staff !

A very exciting interview podcast! Nelly was invited to a lunch with the Rolling Stone staff and their conversations while eating were recorded and uploaded online exclusively at Rolling Stone website for us all to hear. You can feel how energetic, loose and fun-loving she is just by listening to her talk. She talked about everything, from how it feels like jamming in the studio with Timbaland in Hit Factory at Miami, her now canned collaboration with Chris Martin, her inspiration for the new album, to her musical background and her childhood Halloween costumes. She laughed and joked a lot. Sometimes it felt like the staff tried to fake their laughs so that her jokes didn't fall flat. But overall, this is totally worth your 28 minutes. I felt like I was actually being there, you know. Great fun.

Two Other Ways To Waste Your Weekend...With YouTube Music Videos

The guys at Pitchfork Media just had so much free time on their hands that they decided to post a list of 100 awesome music videos on YouTube. You can expect everything there but serious. It's just plain fun going through the list. For crying out loud, they even got David Hasselhoff's 'Hooked On A Feeling'.
Awesome list, must check out! Click here to get there.

Oh and what a coincidence! David Hasselhoff also got picked in the Top 10 Worst Celebrity Music Video Crossovers at Subject To Blackout. Very interesting and informative. I could have never even known Alyssa Milano had a music stint. Just look at that pic! Now this is the kind of guilty pleasure that VH1 would describe as 'Awesomely Bad'. Check it out right now!

It seems that David Hasselhoff is making a comeback stronger than ever. He's got a number one movie (Click), high-rated tv show (America's Got Talent), now he's all over the web community. Don't forget his emotional tears at the American Idol finale. And now he's reportedly in the work of a new album! Too bad. Somewhere in some abandoned garage, that Knight Rider car is green with envy.

Picks Of The Week #27

Lyrics Of The Week

I'm so hooked on this song right now. The beats, the hooks, the vocals, and the fact that it presented to me a much more youthful India Arie. The lyrics are meaningful, too, yeah it tries to teach you things but not in a preachy way. Read it below:

I Am Not My Hair
India Arie

Little girl with the press and curl
Age eight I got a Jheri curl
Thirteen I got a relaxer
I was a source of so much laughter
At fifteen when it all broke off
Eighteen and went all natural
February two thousand and two
I went and did
What I had to do
Because it was time to change my life
To become the women that I am inside
Ninety-seven dreadlock all gone
I looked in the mirror
For the first time and saw that hey....

I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations no no
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am a soul that lives within

Good hair means curls and waves
Bad hair means you look like a slave
At the turn of the century
Its time for us to redefine who we be
You can shave it off
Like a South African beauty
Or get in on lock
Like Bob Marley
You can rock it straight
Like Oprah Winfrey
If its not what's on your head
Its what's underneath and say hey...

I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations no no
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am a soul that lives within

Does the way I wear my hair make me a better person?
Does the way I wear my hair make me a better friend? Oooh
Does the way I wear my hair determine my integrity?
I am expressing my creativity..

Breast Cancer and Chemotherapy
Took away her crown and glory
She promised God if she was to survive
She would enjoy everyday of her life ooh
On national television
Her diamond eyes are sparkling
Bald headed like a full moon shining
Singing out to the whole wide world like hey...

I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations no no
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am a soul that lives within

Nelly Furtado feat. Chris Martin/ All Good Things (Come To An End)

Brought to you because EMI didn't act fast enough to pull off the early Japanese releases. Actually I don't get why EMI wouldn't want to release this. It's for sure not because Chris sounded too 'rocky'. He actually sounded more R&B, though. But he wasn't featured much, more like backing vocals. Still, it's a decent midtempo song and I prefer this version to the album version without Chris. You can download it here in all of its raw glory, you can even hear Chris and Nelly talking and laughing before and after the song.

Skye/ Love Show

I had no idea this ex-Morcheeba vocalist just launched her solo career til one day I caught her music video on tv. Turned out she got an album released since February. This song still has an electronic, chilled-out feel to it like back in the Morcheeba days, but also more of a r&n/soul vibe. Lovely song for summer nights.

Music Video Of The Week

Christina Aguilera/ Ain't No Other Man

Yay, brand new music video from Christina. Suddenly her comeback now is bigger than ever since her Mickey Mouse Club fellow is currently drowning in housework and the anticipation of her second baby, while her hubby's popozaoing his way to a crappy music career (okay, I'm just finding excuse to talk about that jaw-dropping Bazaar know the one...the 'EWWW!' one)
Okay, back on track. This video was directed by Bryan Barber, who also directed Outkast's 'Hey Ya' and their upcoming movie. It featured Christina posing as Baby Jane. It was a proper pop video in an old school setting: lots of dressing-up playing and dancing around. Kinda boring, but fun to watch. Watch out for the outro, way retrolicious.

Fabulous Cover ! Muse Did Frankie Valli!

Muse-Can't Take My Eyes Off You

Wow, I've just come by BerkeleyPlace and found out this brilliant cover of Frankie Valli's 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You' by, unlikely enough, Muse. And this 60s-pop-meets-arena-rock cover actually sounds really good! It was featured as a b-side of the 'In Your World/Deadstar' CD single released in 2002. Love the way they did it! You should check it out, definitely!

New Singles From Paris Hilton & Fergie!

Figure I should start giving you guys the low down when I discover exciting new music from other blogs. Well, not a bad idea. In fact, I'll be doing that right now.
Oxygen Chunks just got two brand new tracks leaked. One from heiress-turn-singer Paris Hilton, one from the humpy lumpy Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas.

Paris Hilton-Turn it Up:

The second single from her upcoming debut album. Yes, there's a SECOND single out soon, since you guys love her first single so much (it debuted on Billboard Top 100 this week at 18!, think of it, 18!). And you think 'Stars Are Blind' is kinda bad. This one's a Scott Storch production, but looks like the guy doesn't sweat himself much walking to the bank. The song shouldn't even be turned up at any clubs (when Paris's not around, of course), because it sounds so lame, and Paris still keeps her authentic dying-kitty vocals. However, you know you'll end up giving it a try anyway.

Click here to go to Oxygen Chunks and download it.

Fergie-London Bridge (Oh, Sh**):

Get your pen and notebook here, Fergie's about to teach you more new streets slangs about body parts you can't mention. I was kinda excited when I heard Fergie's going solo, but this supposedly first single from her is disappointing, trying to follow the successful formula of 'My Humps'. It was produced by Polow the Don, who produced Pussycat Dolls' "Buttons', but it's quite unoriginal. The chorus reminds me of Kelis' 'Milkshake' or Teairra Mari's 'No Daddy', the verse's similar to that of J-Kwon's 'Tipsy', and some parts of it reminds me of Snoop Dogg's 'Drop It Like It's Hot'. It was just all over the place. Despite all that, it's still pretty catchy.

Click here to go to Oxygen Chunks and hear it for yourself.

Remember to click on the comments for those two posts to get the passwords to unzip the file. Otherwise, you won't be able to open them. Have fun!
