Q: What should a music veteran do when he/she wants to come back and make some more money without having to record new materials?
A: Release a 'collaboration' album, where you invite contemporary artists to duet the standards with you. Result: chart success.
That's exactly what Dionne's up to with her new album, aptly-titled, uhm, 'My Friends & Me', coming out this November. Just look at the guest list: Gladys Knight, Olivia Newton-John, Gloria Estefan, Kelis, Reba McEntire, Cyndi Lauper, Celia Cruz, Wynonna Judd, Cheyenne Elliott, Lisa Tucker, Deborah Cox, Chante Moore, Angie Stone, Da Brat & Mýa. Don't say you're not curious.
Think she looks scary in that pic above? Well, have a look at the cheesetastic cd cover:
Mainly, the track that's got everybody talking about is this cover of The Carpenters' 'Close To You' with Mýa. For some reasons, every time I hear the name of this song, I immediately link it to when Homer first met Marge in high school with her then short blue hair in slow motion and all. Oh, nevermind.
Actually, this cover version's pretty decent. It adds a contemporary R&B vibe to the original and Dionne and Mya's vocals both sound crisp and on point. Nothing groundbreaking (not that I expect that), but definitely sweet for the ears.
