Picks Of The Week #9

Lyrics Of The Week

Do You Realize?
The Flaming Lips

Simple but deep and sincere, the lyrics of this song pointed out the obvious facts, then reminded you to make the most of your lives while letting you dive deep into the smooth, dreamy melodies.

Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face
Do you realize we're floating in space
Do you realize that happiness makes you cry
Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize, oh oh oh
Do you realize that everyone you know
Someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Do you realize that you have the most beautiful face
Do you realize?

American Idol Season 5 – Episode 4 Recaps

I gotta say: San Francisco was weird. Too weird. The auditions were bizarre, some of the auditioners possess a voice like they were possessed, I just never heard anything like that before. Simon seemed like he was so driven crazy by the bad that he decided to join the competition for the weirdos. One minute, he was doing a very nice thing by calling Shalicia’s boss to help her get her job back. The next minute, he all misjudged the actually good ones. Although this episode felt so awkward, a few managed to get their moments to shine:

Katharine McPhee: She’s the spotlight of San Francisco, thanks to her mom’s vocal lessons. Although she isn’t outstanding enough for me, let’s see if she can make progress and prove me wrong at the next round.

Shawna: This girl looks so naive, but she does have a pretty good voice.

Jayne Santayana: Is she Japanese? She looks like one. She’s likeable and good enough to pass the audition round, but she’s still got a lot to work on.

Honorable mention to ‘Sway’.

Just for the record, I think Deborah Dawn Tilley is kinda cool, too bad she didn’t make it, it would be cool to see more rock chicks in the competition.

That’s all for AI5 this week. Come back next week for my recaps for the viva Las Vegas auditions.

American Idol Season 5 – Episode 3 Recaps

The auditions this time were held in North Carolina, and a whole of of new auditioners were added to my list for the title of American Idol season 5. These are the ones that I think did real good in their auditions:

Kellie Pickler: This girl reminds me so much of Kelly Clarkson. She resembles Kelly in so many ways: broken family (mom left, dad in prison), job (a waitress), personality (she’s so down-to-earth and nice, and her crying’s cute), name (just different spelling) and most of all, a kickass voice. And she’s good-looking, too. She is definitely the number one contender so far, and I’m really sure that she’s got the potential to make it to the big stage round.

Kendra Swinton and Halicia Thompson: Good auditions of both, and I really like their attitude. Halicia's got a funny bone, and Kendra's one cool mama.

Steven David, Jr. : This guy’s such a ass-kissing prick, but he’s got a pretty good voice and that all matters.

Jeffrey: He can be the ‘It’ country singer this year.

Paris Bennett: A Paris that can really sing! But I’m sure I’ll see more of her for the next weeks to come. She just proves that singing business runs in the family.

Also honorabale mentions to Tyra Schwartz. (I think I spelled that right, don't I?)

That’s it, tomorrow we’ll watch the San Francisco auditions and I hope I’ll see even more upcoming stars there. See you soon.

American Idol Season 5-Episode 2

Just saw episode 2 of AI5, and got two more fave picks from the Denver auditions. First is the amazingly talented Alisha Tucker. She’s only 16, which is the same age as mine, but she can really sing, for real. Plus she looks beautiful, so I don’t think Simon exaggerated at all when saying she’s the best 16-year-old they’ve ever had on the show. She will definitely go way further, mark my words. The other is Rochelle Elaine, who is also a good, soulful singer. The only problem with her is her lack of uniqueness, there’s already a lot of other contestants like her. Speaking of uniqueness, I noticed that chubby, spunky girl with the red, flowery dress. She’s unique in her own way, like the blue-haired, gothic opera chick from season 4. Although they both don’t fit into the what the voters expect, they get to be who they are, and get acclaims for it. On the other side, the bad ones here are just boresomely bad, and that gender-confused ‘guy’…gross! So far, the females are more impressive than the males.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to next week’s episode in North Carolina, there seems to be a number of great auditions, especially that blonde singing ‘Since U Been Gone’. So check back next time for my reviews of AI5!

Woohoo, American Idol Season 5 Premiere!

I've been looking forward to this season premiere the whole week. I gotta say it was great fun watching it. I don't why I'm so eagerly anticipated, because I can't even vote. Maybe it's about the chance of seeing new faces and voices and rooting for the favorite ones. The Chicago auditions were pretty good, the good is good enough and the bad and the ugly kick ass, awesomely bad. Although I haven't found any strong contenders for the next American Idol, I can say a few is definitely promising. That tall brunette who was chasing her sister in the corn field, she's cool. So is that lead singer of some unknown chick band 'Catfight'. It's strange those 4 twins all got the tickets to Hollywood, but they've really got their thing going on. What's the deal with that guy Dave Hoover anyway, how come Paula and Randy said "Yes" to him? That's absolutely nuts. Maybe it's just a moment of generousity, or just a way to boot ratings?
Anyway, I'm so excited for this season, and since the show's supposed to run for 10 seasons, I think maybe the next couple of years, I might actually have a chance to stand there and show off my skills to the judges. I decided to launch a special feature which will cover all episodes of AI5, so stay tuned for more reviews.

Review of Girls Aloud's CD 'Chemistry'!

Girls Aloud/ Chemistry

I must admit I sometimes don’t understand my taste of music. Every now and then, there’s always a kind of music that I consider crap but still manage to enjoy somehow. And Girls Aloud is one of those cases. These girls are freakin’ hot, they’ve got moves and well, they sing okay. They were manufactured from a reality show, and have made their way to become the “It” girl group in the UK. They’re totally commercial! However, most of their singles are catchy, upbeat and perfect for a guilty pleasure, guaranteed to make your feet stomp like crazy. So actually this is the first time I listened to a Girls Aloud full album and yes, it’s the singles-and-fillers kind, but who cares? Girls Aloud know how to score a top 10 hit. A typical recipe is that throw in some flashy guitar riffs, some pumping beats, sung over with silly lyrics, all put together properly. For instance, there’s ‘Biology’ which I’ve been digging recently. Another is techno dance-pop style with cheeky lyrics. And there’s always the wet, soapy ballads for you to get your breath back. Mix all that together and voila, you’ve got the ultimate party album. The two UK bonus tracks are quite good materials, too, one of which is the last track ‘No Regrets’, which is really a cheesy, retro, hit-or-miss 90s pop ballad, started and ended with sounds of the beach waves. Overall, this kind of record won’t get nowhere in the US, but the rest of the world seems to enjoy it, after all it’s all brainless pop power.
PS: This comes with a bonus Christmas cd, but since the season is already over and the bonus Christmas songs are just worthless cash-in, I don't want to talk about it.

Rating: 2,5/5 stars
Trackworthy: Models, Biology, See The Day, Waiting, Long Hot Summer, No Regrets, Racy Lacey.

Picks Of The Week #7

Lyrics Of The Week

Yesterday I listened to this song and coincidently, the lyrics just connected to my feelings at that time. Now that’s way better than paying to talk to a psychiatrist.

Your Heart Is An Empty Room
Death Cab For Cutie

Burn it down till the embers smoke on the ground
And start new when your heart is an empty room
With walls of the deepest blue

Home's face: how it ages when you're away
Spring blooms and you find the love that's true
But you don't know what now to do
Cause the chase is all you know
And she stopped running months ago

And all you see
Is where else you could be
When you're at home
Out on the streetAre so many possibilities
To not be alone

The flames and smoke climbed out of every window
And disappeared with everything that you held dear
And you shed not a single tear for the things that you didn't need
'Cause you knew you were finally free

And all you see
Is where else you could be
When you're at home
Out on the streetAre so many possibilities
To not be alone

And all you see is where else you could be
When you're at home
There on the street are so many possibilities to not be alone

Lene Marlin/ What If

Another delicious teen pop guilty pleasure. The melodies are simple, the lyrics are even simpler, and the acoustic guitar sample keeps looping on the back. Somehow, combined all with Lene’s cutesy, honey-coated vocals just makes this song so likeable.

Flashback

The Cardigans/ My Favourite Game

This recently got stuck in my head again. That smashing intro I don’t seem to get enough of.

Music Video Of The Week

Coldplay/ Talk

I’m sure a lot of you have watched this one, but really, you should watch it again. Because the whole video can be viewed with 3D glasses, that’s what you missed.

Picks Of The Week #6

Lyrics Of The Week

I think it’s the lyrics that made this song an unexpectedly huge global hit last year. Admit it, we’ve all been there sometimes, falling for a stranger on the streets.

You’re Beautiful
James Blunt

My life is brilliant.
My love is pure.
I saw an angel.
Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that,
'Cause I've got a plan.

You're beautiful.
You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw you face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

Yeah, she caught my eye,
As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
Flying high,
And I don't think that I'll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

You're beautiful.
You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw you face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

You're beautiful.
You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you.

Texas/ Can’t Resist

The song title just said it all. The sultry vocals and the sexy lyrics of the song combine together perfectly, making one irresistible tune that’s been stuck in my head for a week. Now this is what I called good pop.

Flashback

Gabrielle/ Sunshine

Originally released in 2000, this is one of those positive, uplifting songs that makes you feel good and appreciate life more, and there are the honey-coated vocals of Gabrielle. Yes, nothing can bring you down.

Music Video Of The Week

The White Stripes/ The Denial Twist

Another masterpiece from director Michel Gondry. The concept is actually very simple, but the special effects leave you questioning: ‘How did they do that?’. Conan O’ Brien also makes a guest appearance in the video. Watch it, and you know what I mean.

Contest Of The Week

Try your luck, and you can stand a chance to get your hands on one of three Warner Urban prize packs including CDs, t-shirts, stickers and posters from artists such as Missy Elliott, Sean Paul, Biggie and more. Only takes you a few minute. Deadline: Jan 31.

Picks Of The Week #5

Lyrics Of The Week

Winter’s over, summer’s near. So it’s logical to make the lyrics for ‘Narrow Daylight’ of Diana Krall my pick for the first week of 2006. Read it right here:

Narrow Daylight
Diana Krall

Narrow daylight entered my room
Shining hours were brief
Winter is over
Summer is near
Are we stronger than we believe?

I walked through halls of reputation
Among the infamous too
As the camera clings to the common thread
Beyond all vanity
Into a gaze to shoot you through

Is the kindness we count upon
Hidden in everyone?

I stepped out in a sunlit grove
Although deep down I wished it would rain
Washing away all the sadness and tears
That will never fall so heavily again

Is the kindness we count upon
Is hidden in everyone?

I stood there in the salt spray air
Felt wind sweeping over my face
I ran up through the rocks to the old
Wooden cross
It's a place where I can find some peace

Narrow daylight entered my room
Shining hours were brief
Winter is over
Summer is near
Are we stronger than we believe?

Girls Aloud/ Biology

Those of you in the US may not know who they are, but in the UK they’ve long been known as the ‘It’ girl group. This song is pure unabashedly catchy pop with great hooks and guitar riffs, once you hear it, you can’t get it off your head, at least for a while. Great guilty pleasure.

Flashback

ABBA/ Happy New Year

To be honest, I think this song is kinda overrated. I mean, we could have a way better song to celebrate this time of the year, if we tried hard enough. It just bored me to death having to listen to it every single year. However, always a nice thing to check back, because it’s a classic for sure.

New: Music Video Of The Week

New section here. Every week, I’m gonna suggest a music video I like and think that you must watch it (could be new, could be old), and all you have to do is go google it and enjoy.
For this week, it’s gonna be:

Mylo vs. Miami Sound Machine/ Dr. Pressure

The first time I saw this on VH1, I though it was in some ‘I Love The 80s’ program. But it was actually made in 2005. Ridiculously funny video with great special effects that gave it a totally 80s look, the dance music had a strong 80s vibe, too, so this is like back to the future. Worth watching. Have I mentioned dancing nurses and police and a Gloria Estefan look-alike?

New:Contest Of The Week

Every week, I give you a link to a cool music-related contest that stands you a chance to win fabulous prizes like cds, dvds, posters, autographed stuff. This week is a must-know for die hard Coldplay fans, you can win a chance to have a private talk on Skype with all four members of the band. All you have to do is to leave a voice mail at Skype and the one that impresses them most will be chosen. Here’s the link:

http://www.skype.com/campaigns/coldplay

Have fun, folks.
